Djúpivogur

On our drive to Breiðdalsvík, we stopped at the small town of Djúpivogur for lunch and some quick sightseeing. Djúpivogur is a small town of only about 350 residents. Despite it being such a small town, the scenery was beautiful!

Here are some photos from around Djúpivogur:

Eggs at Merry Bay sculpture. Each egg represents a species of birds in Iceland.

An interesting looking museum.. we didn't go inside, but we wandered around the yard and looked at all the rock and bone sculptures.

One thing I've noticed about driving through Iceland is the lack of on-the-go healthy food options. At each pit stop there is usually a little eatery that serves hamburgers, cheese melts, fish and chips and the like. Otherwise you can grab some pre-made sandwiches and candy. If you have any kind of special diet, you're SOL unless you plan well ahead. You might be lucky and find yourself in a small town such as Djúpivogur, which has a small grocery store, but in a lot of cases you're not going to find one for miles. Not to mention you're going to pay a price for healthy food and greens.. if they're in stock.. and if they are, they might be on their last leg anyway. Ah the joys of living in the sticks! ;)

I must say.. our stop in Djúpivogur really made me appreciate Höfn. I don't think I could live in a town any smaller than Höfn... I require a decently stocked grocery store among other things.. and when I went to the hair dresser in Höfn, I was told that there is not a hair salon in Djúpivogur, so each month a hair dresser from Höfn drives to Djúpivogur and serves about 20 clients on one Saturday. Yikes! Having to drive a distance just to get my hair done? No thanks. So if you're an unemployed hair stylist in Iceland, move to Djúpivogur. It sounds like they could use one.

  1. Photos look amazing - every time I see pictures of Iceland it always seems to have an other-worldly quality. Number One on my European places to visit that I haven't made it to yet.
